Uncertainties in galaxy rotation curves

چکیده

Assessing the likelihood that rotation curve of a galaxy matches predictions from formation simulations requires uncertainties in circular speed as function radius derived observational data be statistically robust. Few presented literature meet this requirement. In paper we present new standalone tool, makemap, estimates fitted velocity at each pixel Gauss-Hermite fits to 3D spectral cube, together with its uncertainty obtained modified bootstrap procedure. We apply tool neutral hydrogen spectra for 18 galaxies THINGS sample, and maps uncertainties. propagate estimated map into our previously-described model fitting DiskFit derive curves. The obtain these take account not only errors, but also systemic velocity, position centre, inclination line sight, forced non-circular motion. They are therefore much better-defined than values have previously been available. Our on speeds differ previous by factors ranging up five, being smaller some cases larger others. conclude kinematic models well-resolved HI datasets vary widely their precision reliability, potentially value comparisons cosmological simulations.

Fitting Galaxy Rotation Curves Without Dark Matter

The notion is presented that fitting galaxy rotation curves is possible without the invocation of dark matter. Equations of motion similar to those used to describe the internal motions of terrestrial weather systems are applied to the rotation curves of galaxies. However, due to the four-dimensional nature of the equations, additional terms arise. One of these additional terms is particularly ...

Modified Gravitational Theory and Galaxy Rotation Curves

The nonsymmetric gravitational theory predicts an acceleration law that modifies the Newtonian law of attraction between particles. For weak fields a fit to the flat rotation curves of galaxies is obtained in terms of the mass (massto-light ratio M/L) of galaxies. The fits assume that the galaxies are not dominated by exotic dark matter. The equations of motion for test particles reduce for wea...

Galaxy Rotation Curves from String Theory

This is a speculative attempt to connect string theory with cosmological observation. Inspired by an exactly solvable model in string theory, and based on the assumption that all matter is made of strings, galaxies will couple to a string gauge field and execute Landau orbits, much like electrons in an external magnetic field. This three-parameter phenomenological model can adequately fit the g...

Galaxy Rotation Curves in Covariant Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity

Using the multiplicity of solutions for the projectable case of the covariant extension of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, we show that an appropriate choice for the auxiliary field allows for an effective description of galaxy rotation curves. This description is based on static and spherically symmetric solutions of covariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity and does not require Dark Matter.

Galaxy rotation curves: the effect of the Ampere force

Using an example of the galaxy, an attempt is made to explain the flat rotational curves of gas and plasma in galaxies by means of the Ampere force. Using acceptable models for the galactic magnetic field and plausible physical parameters, we find that the flat rotational curves for gas and plasma can be obtained based purely on the observed baryonic (visible) matter distribution and the ampere...
